Forms of violence

The different forms of violence are often combined and intertwined so that the same person is forced to encounter several different forms of violence at the same time or over time. Sometimes, violence can start so subtly that it is difficult to identify it as violence. It can begin as things like name-calling, financial restrictions or isolation from other relationships.

Later, the violence may begin to involve more extensive psychological violence and physical or sexual violence. Violence against children, older people or people with disabilities may also take the form of negligence or failure to meet basic needs.

The perpetrator of violence may blame the other person for their violent behaviour, even though the perpetrator themselves decided to use violence. Violence is always the perpetrator’s choice. The victim is not responsible for any violence committed by the other person.

You can learn about different forms of violence and see examples via the drop-down menu on this page. Acts of violence may also include other forms of violence. Knowledge about the forms of violence helps you identify violence.
